About Merchant Inns
Merchant Inns Ltd is a growing, dynamic, privately owned company focused on purchasing and restoring freehold inns in mainly rural but easily accessible locations throughout the UK. Some are listed buildings and are often influenced by local history. It currently has six units with plans to grow to 30 – 50 over the next 3 to 5 years.
Merchant Inns sets out, in a caring way, to sympathetically restore these often neglected inns to their former glory in the context of modern comforts. Thus they become once more an integral part of the local community, as they were always intended to be, just much better.
COMPANY PHILOSOPHY
Merchant Inns’ aim is to add value to each of the venues restored with ‘sensational food, stylish bedrooms and sensible prices’. These venues re‐emerge as culinary inns, bridging the gap between local pub and restaurant and offering that ‘premium casual dining’ on which the company has built its reputation. This is a total experience, starting with the location, the refurbished interior, the attention to customer care and the choice of food at affordable prices, from bar snacks to classic pub dishes and a‐la‐carte menus. The final ingredient is the kitchen team whose chefs are chosen from some of the best culinary schools.
In paying special attention to the bedrooms refurbishment, we focus on an accommodation category called ‘luxury budget’, and Merchant Inns’ future investments will reflect this. Bedrooms offer flat wide screen plasma televisions, focus lighting, high quality toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities and free Wi-Fi internet access.
Each Merchant Inns pub has a style of its own, reflecting the history and character of the location as well as that of the general manager and of the local community.
FOOD AND DRINK
The company is passionate in its belief that it is possible to provide great food in an informal setting without losing the essence of the traditional English country pub and without alienating the regulars.
Menus, individual to each pub, are intended to change with the season and increasingly take advantage of local produce. For example, Mr Parson’s sausages at The Horse & Groom and the Carnarvon Arms come from the Butcher’s Dog Sausage Company in Hungerford and the fish is from New Wave Seafood based locally in Fairford. As well as imaginative a la carte dishes, there are classic pub dishes, a set price weekday lunch menu and a set price Sunday lunch.
